This Divorce Lawyer Has a Question That Can Tell You if Your Marriage Will Last

There’s no bigger question mark in life than knowing if the person you’re marrying is going to stay by your side through thick and thin. That’s generally the intent, but life has a way of throwing curveballs at you that will put pressure on that eternal bond more often than you’ll feel comfortable with. There’s one test you can pretty much put yourselves through as a couple from the get go, and it will give your relationship a much stronger foundation.

According to Justin Lee, divorce lawyer, the biggest relationship test you can go through is asking your partner to sign a prenuptial agreement. It sounds pretty high stakes – and it is – but it’s the best way to instantly know how far your partner is willing to go to make the relationship work. It’s a scenario that forces both of you to actively think about what will happen to each of you in the case that the relationship doesn’t work out. By doing that, you’re both certain that you’ll have the necessary protection and stability.

It’s easy to know how your partner will respond to this, since all you really have to do is slowly bring it up – say you read about it somewhere or saw a TikTok video or something – and tell them that some lawyer said that everyone should get a prenup set up. If they’re going to be hugely negative to that, it should probably at least be a minor red flag for your relationship. It’s a valid concern to want to be safe in the case of a divorce, and if you’re going to be spending your entire lives together the prenup won’t even go into effect anyway.

People usually consider a prenuptial agreement to be something that only the rich need to protect their assets, but Justin Lee doesn’t agree with that point of view. The primary function is to protect yourself, so that when you get a divorce you’re not forced to abide by the rules that the government has laid out. And let’s be honest, if you’re going to be spending thousands of dollars on a wedding, what’s a few extra hundred dollars to make a legal document going to do? It’ll be worth it in the long run, I promise.
